@therealjrn Ikea’s lower floor maze is evil evil evil. It starts with the kitchen stuff area in which you will inevitably say “Oooh, this is better than the one we have” several times, and you’ll see That Thing You’ve Been Meaning To Get/Replace, and then you need a carrier bag, and then… doom.
@therealjrn@werehatrack Much like markets putting the staples at the far end of the store or the pharmacy counter all the way in the back, Ikea’s “maze” is done on purpose.
Just take note about what “shortcut” to use. Shortcut to lighting? Sure, that’ll bypass a few departments. Shortcut to kitchen? You’ll be back at the beginning.
THAT’S what my last project/problem was.
I guess it could’ve and would’ve been worse had someone gotten hurt when the wood split (right where the screw was) and the chair they were sitting in broke into two pieces landing both chair and said someone on the floor.
It ended up being my sister’s project since she had clamps and the correct supplies for the job. And what a beautiful job she did repairing it for me!
@Lynnerizer A long time ago with a skill set far far away I repaired a rocking chair whose rear seat spring attachments had broken. New piece of wood + carriage bolts + matching shellac made it almost pro.
Serious question, what are the RPMs on the screwdriver? I have one it but it turns much slower than I could do so by hand. So kind of eliminates a key value proposition.
@ChrisHBelAir Its no-load speed is claimed to be 220rpm; from experience, that’s probably closer to 180 in real life, and likely to drop to 150-ish with just a free-running fastener to deal with. Under-load rotational rate will depend on the amount of torque required. I’d expect it to be faster (and less effort) than discontinual hand motion on low-torque tasks, and I’d also expect it to bog down badly if trying to drive a screw without a pilot hole. Its max torque is under 5 ft lb, and the max torque it’s rated to withstand when applying manual effort is just shy of 6 ft lb.
My house is filled with IKEA furniture. The only problem I’ve ever had with assembly was that my hubby doesn’t like to read the instructions/look at the pictures! He has screwed screws too much that they poke through the sides of panels (not IKEA but TARGET stuff)and ruined the finish. He often substitutes hardware pieces because “they didn’t send enough ____” . He just didn’t count the pieces and use the correct ones. So, now when I get new furniture from IKEA, I have my kids come over to build it when dads away. My 2nd hand store, which furnished most of my house, closed when the owner passed. Old dressers have real deep drawers, not just a drawer front panel that makes it look like it deep! Made out of real wood, not composite MSF.
@jkawaguchi MDF is the classy stuff. Particle board is the mainstrem crap. There have been way too many people who came home after a flood and found that their particle board furniture had slumped into a pile of slime.
Depends on the quality of the furniture.
Fun if you are making it yourself from scratch with good materials.

@werehatrack Here’s the image you requested for “furniture assembled with some parts left over”
Dunno why it couldn’t have done that the first time.
@mediocrebot @werehatrack Those parts are the harbinger of future collapse.
Tulsa is getting an IKEA! I’ll let you know in a few months.

My budget has a love/hate relationship with IKEA.

@therealjrn @werehatrack Ikea is a great self test for fiscal discipline … that I fail. I wish the Kafferep oatmeal cookies came in 1/2 packs.
@cfg83 @therealjrn Two words: Frozen meatballs.
How about putting furniture BACK TOGETHER…

THAT’S what my last project/problem was.

I love carriage bolts. Carriage bolts are butch.
@cfg83
Nothing like a great project to be proud of!

What satisfaction huh…
@cfg83 @Lynnerizer In the workroom, there’s a computer desk I built 38-ish years ago. It’s still in use.
@cfg83 @werehatrack
Very cool!

Hold the screwdriver square to the table, JLo! You’ll strip the screw head!

I just installed a whole ass walk-in closet system and it sucked.
But I’m too cheap to pay someone to do it.
@kittykat9180 Better than half-assed amiright?
@therealjrn idk, at a few points I may have been OK with half assing it.
